赵小凤乃蓬门碧玉，由姑母撮合，跟李家宝结成夫妇。婚后夫妻相处融洽，小凤亦克尽妇道。乡中有张氏一家自省城回归故里，满屋子精巧洋货，引得风气朴实的农民渐生虚荣，加上有船姑娘桂英嫁给小军官，回乡时打扮新潮，各人均以为城市黄金遍地。小凤的友人阿芳最先蜕变，跟人私奔。小凤亦受张家儿子怂恿，欲往城中任模特儿。家宝因此大表不满，盛怒下掌掴妻子，害得小凤精神大受创伤，夤夜出走。幸得吴校长谆谆开导，终能互相谅解。不久，阿芳由城返乡，并染上毒瘾，最后留下遗言，于河畔自尽。此时，小凤终觉悟虚荣之累，决定与家宝同耕共读，不再作非份之想。。December 1969, Thelonious Monk in Paris.
