影片以陕北民歌《赶牲灵》的作者张天恩的生活为原型，讲述了主人公张德义与翠翠之间纯美而又曲折的爱情故事。一对两小无猜的恋人，在黄土高原上，对着蓝天白云发誓一辈子都要“死死活活相跟上”。初恋的甜美很快掺进了现实的苦水，翠翠之父为做生意的舅舅做了借款担保人，未料，借款人蒸发人间，债主日夜相逼，牢狱之门已向父亲打开。为救翠父，张德义日夜兼程，踪迹晋陕蒙，债务还仅剩二十块大洋后，债主逼翠父自杀不遂，而情敌又乘机逼翠成亲……面对亲情与爱情，男女主人公的选择完全出乎意料，但演绎的却是一段至美的情感，而这独特之美始终徜徉在音乐的海洋里。。Weapons of Death is not the most original Polizi flick you're ever likely to see, but that's not too much of a problem since the genre tends to borrow from itself often anyway.
